Dear Melinda

When I first heard about the SPIRIT program I was intrigued by the idea of receiving training for employment.  Sure, I knew that I was not guaranteed a job after the training was over, however, I considered it an adventure worth pursuing.  I was particularly thrilled when I discovered that Pat Risser was going to be an instructor.  I had met Pat before and I have a lot of respect for him.  The fact was, however, I did not know what I was getting into.  I did not realize just how much practical knowledge we would be absorbing in eight weeks.  The word "intensive" is an apt description of what the SPIRIT class entails.  We have had instruction on many different topics ranging from social security to taking steps forward in my recovery.  If I had known what I was getting into I would have still enthusiastically embraced the class.  What I believe is the most important aspect of the class is the amount of growth that people have experienced.

I myself have learned that I do not always have to "go it alone" when I feel down or anxious or otherwise moody.  I have discovered that it is OK to pick up the phone and tell a class mate how I am feeling that evening, or to share in check in (or checkout) what my emotional state is that day.  I have found that the class has formed a bond that I believe will last well after September.  I have also found that the SPIRIT class has given me some grounding in a mind that is often in another state of consciousness.  (Translated – head in the clouds.)

I must admit that I have discovered aspects of myself that I do not think are appealing, such as my arrogance pride in my intelligence, and my arrogance, but, I am also learning to accept myself as I am.  I can not over state the importance of what we are all learning in class.  The resources we are learning about will prepare us nicely for the real world, much more so than what a college degree will.  Not that I do not believe in college, because I strongly believe an education is important.  A college degree provides people with a theoretical construct that may or may not be applicable to real life.  This class provides reality, sometimes too much reality at once (I may have been overwhelmed by a lot of details) but learning what we are learning is applicable to much of life.  I strongly urge you to help provide future classes to people who may not believe in themselves but do have abilities to grow (that includes most people out there).

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxxx

P.S.  I have also learned that I am a loveable person and this realization has allowed me to connect with others.
